Subject: Whitelisted for Google Friend Connect
I just received notification that my site's been whitelisted for the "Google Friend Connect" service which is in the Preview release stage. [www.google.com]

Quote:
Google Friend Connect means more people engaging more deeply with your website -- and with each other.

Quote:
Your users can easily invite friends from social networks and contact lists to visit and join your site

So it's a social networking FaceBook kind of service but this one's distributed over the whole web on our pages..

Your thoughts.

Hi GB,

Does it have any application to sites that are not already interactive, eg could I use it to *introduce* interactivity in a meaningful way to (say) my Gallery or 'green' sites?

Too tired tonight to absorb the Google marketspeak!

Yeah, it's a code that you place on a static page and get the gadgets inserted there, you can also as a java developer create your own gadgets and have on other people sites if they are useful.

Hi,

OK, I've dropped a test into the bottom of each page on my 'green' site. Feel free to give it a whirl.

I'm not looking forward to having to moderate user content though, which is an evil that I've been avoiding for years and years! B^>

PS. Wasn't aware of needing to be 'whitelisted'; just signed in under my Google account to set it up...

At the time GB posted, it was invite only. I'm in now too with my GMail account. I'll start toying with it a bit now.

You are GB. Aren't we all?

So far I didn't see any possibility to switch language (only the option to change a few words)

Also there seems no way to create a login possibility to my vertically oriented menu.

I already run a forum on the site. So I would have two ways to sign-in on one site!

Lastly I will have to create a new include file as I don't have one to include content at the end. My last include starts with the footer of the page (this one is not G's fault of course).

Just my experiences so far.

You can change the sing in / out buttons text to your own language in another tab when you're logged in and generating the code which is what you call the option to change few words. There is a country=us in the code if you rightclick and select properties in IE on the sign in gadget box, so the option most probably will be there to select country language when out of beta.

If you can integrate your forum login with Open ID Jo, it might be easier for your members to login once in both.

I just uploaded some 2000 files to the server to handle the new server side include.

I've enabled this feature on over 200 pages now and experienced the first comment while uploading files. So let's see how it goes.

(comments are open to anonymous users now, although I didn't see any anti-spam measurements by G. So this can be a few days experiment only)

After two days I've seen all body parts normally covered by some underwear all over the site. I think I can hire a team of mods if I would want to continue this anonymous posting.

That sounds like a major drawback--I wonder why Google didn't set something up to help prevent or minimize such stuff?

On some pages it looks like a real flame war.

A typical conversation:

Anonymous: Nice page!
Anonymous: Me not like.
Anonymous: Fuck you.
Anonymous: Go fuck your mother.
Anonymous: You ass hole.
Anonymous: Hey, what she looks like.
Anonymous: etc.

I was afraid of this, but at least wanted to try.

Of course I deleted all offensive messages, but the total lack of control offered by Google at the moment makes it not the kind of service I was hoping for.

Yes. It's just a matter of injecting a piece of javascript where you want it.

Hmm. If it's that simple... It would bring web 2.0 to my site. But having to moderate it 24/7 is just not acceptable.

Could you post a link to a page on your site with comments you DIDN'T have to delete?

This page needs constant moderating:

And this page doesn't:

But remember the comment option is only on-line for two days now.

Very interesting. I could see using this on new pages / selected pages to generate more buzz.

If they can work out the bugs I want to use this.

OK, I gave it (almost) three days and now I switched back to pre-moderation. This morning a group of people were using the comment box as a chat medium. I had to delete hundreds of comments. After deleting the comments for a certain page they simply switched to another (So I guess they were also connected through MSN or something).

After switching off the instant posting they kept going for 30 mins. or so and finally they gave up now.

I actually wanted many many years ago to have each page in my Gallery as a separate 'room' in which people could go for a quiet chat...

But I now can't bear the thought of the moderation effort and legal dangers of what people might get up to...

I don't know how all these 'social' networks are dealing with what is posted but at least I found it very inappropriate for my site.

I posted a little note above the comment box that we're reviewing comments before making them public.

The result is much less comments, but the ones made are without doubt more serious.

I haven't given my visitors review options, just a signup and there's like 70 brave souls that did so far with nothing to gain but the pleasure of signing up smiling smiley

Once Google offers gadgets and toys I can consider adding some of those.

Not even anywhere a place they can tell you how pleased they are with signing up. ROTFL

130 signups + 5 blocked

I think the point is as more people sign up on different sites, your site name and link remains in their profile for others to see and click on, also they themselves come back to your site and check who else signed up, that creates more traffic for our sites in theory hence the social networking bit.

The problem is Google and us should give them gadgets and toys for them to remain interested (loyal), something Google is yet to do.

I know I can multiply daily sigups by a factor of 10 if I put a little text recommending it, I just can't get myself to do that with such poor available options.

Do I understand this correctly? People can sign up but do nothing else? Why would anyone sign up? What do they get?

The pleasure of signing up!

I've 5 signups now, although people can post anonymously, which has been done hundreds of times now. I just putted the small 'login' button just above the comment box. Let's see if there are more signups doing that.

I really hope G is planning on improving the service because the options given now lack about everything each forum/cms system available has already.
