Subject: Mid-page anchors: a name or span id?
Hi,

Since the dawn of time/HTML, I've made mid-page anchors, eg for the target of
somepage.html#target
with the
<a name="target">some text</a>
construction, but I've just noticed a big site (NYT) using
<span id="target></span>some text

What does anyone else use? Any pros and cons?

Rgds

Damon

I use your way too, but then as everyone knows I am still back in the days of HTML 1.0.

For the benefit of the ignorant - please can someone explain what a mid-page anchor is and what it does.

A link that jumps to a specified part of a document.

Like this one that jumps to Gegabits contribution in this thread.

or the homepage links that jump to the last message within a thread

Goodness, so I'm still hip and trendy by the standards of this group then, those of us not dribbling too much.

(Spent much of today stuck in traffic so not feeling enthusiastic about researching this topic to see if you can skip to ANY tag's id...)

Three of us sharing a car, so decent gCO2/km! And on our way to persuade an Oxford collage to put up solar PV. We'll see how it pans out.

PS. You got the wrong photo: there were 3 of us!

actually I find that photo funny in another way
See how the one on top is pushing the other one?

Represents a lot of how life is like
pushing a ball of sh*t for a living
and fighting one another for what is eventually just crap
