Subject: Request for a friend: good UK hosting...
Hi,

I just received this:

Quote:
I am trying to find a cheap, but yet reliable web hosting / domain name registration company so my wife can setup her portfolio and client demo sites. She is currently hosting on the free geocities hosting packages which have a lot of problems in terms of ads, etc. You have any recommendations? She tends to have most things in flash, html, css, javascript, so as long it supports those and ftp upload then i think it would suffice.

Would anyone like to pipe up with their current recommendations again, for the record?

My friend+wife are in the UK, so obvious candidate locations for hosting are the UK, US and Germany/Holland IMHO.

Rgds

Try [www.freevirtualservers.com]

I use the free package to host my newly acquired .co.uk domain version of my site. They seem to fit the bill, wno problems and they are dead cheap!

So there is only file serving needed. Not a single server side technology like ASP or PHP. Not even SSI. This means any provider will do the job. Here in NL I know decent and reliable providers but none of them are cheap.

Maybe if your friends have a fixed IP they are done with just installing Apache or IIS on their home computer (I have no idea about bandwidth demands).

Hi J,

Some/many ADSL contracts prohibit serving HTTP, technically and legally, unless you go to 'business class' tariffs.

But yes, I think you can get close to hosting performance from a good home server.

I have a multi-site hosting account with pipeten.co.uk 70 plus VAT per year.

I believe it supports all the requirements.

I also use Pipeten and Media Temple - would recommend both of them.
