Subject: Letter to Jeff Bezos
The following is a copy of the letter I finally got around to sending to Jeff Bezos.

Quote:
Dear Mr. Bezos,

I am a long-time customer of Amazon.com. I placed my first order with
your company within a month of the company's start-up. And, I have been
an Associate since the affiliate program began. I chose, and still
choose, to advertise Amazon products on my web sites - and to do my own
shopping at Amazon.com - because of the trust I have in Amazon.

As an Associate I have participated in the official Amazon Associates
Discussion forum
(http://forums.prosperotechnologies.com/n/mb/listsf.asp?webtag=am-associhelp)
for many years. The forum could be a good resource for those of us
promoting Amazon.com and its products. But, for some time now, the
discussions have been overwhelmed by a single individual who continually
attacks others and disparages Amazon. When we report individual posts
which violated Amazon's terms of service, they are, eventually, deleted.
But, there is no active moderation of the discussions or any participation
in them by representatives of Amazon.

As an example, below is the text of one of the messages posted by this
individual recently:

"Screw you, you god damn idiot. Seriously. Go screw yourself, you piece of
monkey crap."

The forum software allows individuals to "ignore" posts by specific
aliases. But, it apparently allows one individual to create a number of
aliases. The person in question has posted under many different aliases
including some masquerading as a representative of Amazon.com. He's even
used "Jeff Bozos" as an alias.

The discussion forum could be an excellent resource for those of us trying
to promote Amazon.com. As it is, however, it is an embarrassment. I
would like to see two main things done to improve the forum.

First, I'd like to see someone from Amazon actively participate in the
forum as both a moderator and a liason between us, the Associates, and
Amazon.com. I don't think this would require more than a couple of hours
per workday.

Second, I would like to see the discussion forum hosted by Amazon.com
itself. Currently, it is hosted by a third-party (Prospero/Mzinga) and the
forum software is unmaintained - old and buggy and poorly integrated into
the "Associates Central" portal at Amazon.com.

The Amazon Web Services Developers Forum is hosted by Amazon, provides
more features, and is actively mantained by Amazon. I'd like to see the
Associates Discussion Forum moved to the same software.

Thank you for your time,

Roger Smith

BTW ... using Word, I embedded the URLs as hyperlinks into the text. It wasn't until I printed the document that I realized that wouldn't work on paper.

I've mailed the letter to Amazon's Corporate address and e-mailed a copy to an address that worked for me in the past.

Thanks for doing that, Roger. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Our "friend" has been fairly busy on the site recently, though not to quite the extent he had been before.

I'm just waiting for change. I'm still posting there to answer newbie questions but any serious discussions I want to have I'll keep for here.

Well using his original screen name he's largely been sensible [for him]. I don't know what his current other alias posts because it's on ignore.

Anyway, rots of ruck Roger. Don't mind if I don't hold my breath.

Nicely put - I hope you get some response from this - but it would be sad to see you leave here...

I got a response from a real-live person at "Executive Customer Relations." She said that Amazon is aware of the problem, but they don't have the resources to assign an Associate to moderate the board. She said they have plans to better combat the problem in the future, but she didn't outline what they are.

Not the answer I wanted, but at least it is something.

You can't get rid of us that easily! :-)

The charter of this discussion forum is not the same as the Associates forum. There is a little overlap, but there's no reason we wouldn't participate here even if the Associates forum were restored to civility.

Amen to that Roger.

Harold, I honestly think Amazon don't give a damn. They've got the best of both worlds, minimal cost and a free advice system for new associates.

Ian, that's true, but they've also got a resident troll which I think could be a potential source of embarrassment. It would only take one story in an online news source for the word to get out.

Exactly: I think that they are being foolish and by NOT taking steps to deal with a problem that they know about they could well be seen to be condoning the behaviour and thus liable for any consequences of, DMCA / Safe Harbour or not...

(IANAL of course, but I have run an ISP and been threatened with legal action for the behaviour of my users, etc...)

Any update Roger or has it been embedded in the usual time capsule?

After reporting a physical threat made by "Expendable" towards me in the Associates forum I stopped being nice and accused them of abetting his personal attacks by not doing anything to stop them. They removed the offending post, but didn't reply to my complaint and there is no evidence they have any intention of doing anything about the problem. So, that's it for me. I'm no longer participating in that forum as long as they allow him free reign.

Is this ringing any bells????? Sounds very similar to something that went on last year in WMW. Once again there was no satisfactory result. But at least we have here!

It's different--WMW over-moderates. There's no monitoring of the Amazon Assoc. boards...

Amongst civilized people there's not much moderation needed. I think I can count the number of times I've edited a post on one hand.

(our sign-up process must have something to do with that).
