Subject: Non-shady .com/.org registrars
Networksolutions wants ~$40/year to renew my .com and .org registrations and it's not like I've had anything other than off-hand customer support from them all these years.

Can anyone suggest non-shady reliable and cheaper alternatives for a handful of .com/.org domains, especially if UK based? All I need them to do is delegate to my DNS servers; no Web site, no email, no private registration.

Rgds

You could write to my host Rob Marlborough at WebWizards and ask him what he can offer.

I've asked him for you, I'll get back... I sent this:

Thanks Ian.

Note that I *am* a registrar for the .uk namespace, so I almost know what I'm doing! It's just these pesky gTLDs.

Rob wasn't much help at all. But here's his reply.

I do domains for $15/year, [registerwizards.com] :-)
‚ÄčThere's cheaper around but most raise their rates for future renewals...
Thanks,
Rob
That's $US15

Ian... First domain in the process of being transferred.

If nothing else I notice that NetSol offers a bargain renewal at the point to try to initiate a transfer elsewhere!

Does it undercut the competition?
Would you accept it if it did?

I hate that.
I know I will need to threaten to change my TV, Telephone and Broadband supplier from Sky to BT next month before Sky give me another 12 month discount on my package. If they provided a reasonable price fro loyal customers in the first place it would save us all some work.

Ts&Cs are not easily visible for the "don't leave us offer" which is sneaky of itself.

But I'm now getting more bad service (eg demands that I call a US number to release my domain) so it's unlikely to have me stay.

After all this time with NetSol not responding to any of my support requests other than with automated emails sometimes demanding that I make international phone calls (historically they love to leave me on hold, too), finally I contacted/shamed them on Twitter and they called me.

Shambolic customer service overall, as it has been for many many years, but hats off to the two human beings in NetSol who worked with me today to actually resolve the first issue.

I have restarted the first domain transfer. The rest will follow in due course...

OT: Why has the forum seemed to have died? Hardly anyone posts any more, more to do with people leading real lives in the northern summer than anything else?

I think it is with T and J having other things to do with their lives, unfortunately.

Would be great to have them active again.

I understand that the ducks are no more - but she has been adopting stray dogs.

Perfectly happy to get shaggy dog stories instead, as long as they're not shady dogs or registrars.

And dog that answers to the name of Network Solutions should possibly be put down for its own good...

Here's what I've been busy with lately:
[plus.google.com]

All functional, including the money taking bit. Always dreamed about having an Arcade. So now I finally built one myself smiling smiley.

I assume they were your kids Jo?

Curiously the local computer technician has one or two of them in his shop. Not kids, arcade games.

Never asked him why, or if anyone actually uses them.

Yes my kids. The machine I built runs on emulator SW that runs all games I ever played. Brings back memories of all kinds of places I went to. Unfortunately the project is finished. It was quite fun building it.

Very good!

I'm really enjoying the microcontroller stuff I'm working on; the same sort of mixture of hardware and software and magic!
