Subject: Good small favicon.ico
Hi,

I've just knocked up a (crap, and over-large) favicon.ico for one of my small sites, but it is definitely crap and it is definitely too large (well over 1kByte) and I wondered what anyone here uses to optimise their favicons (I built it at favicon.cc) or indeed if anyone would be kind enough to spend 5 minutes making me a less crap one? %-P

FWIW, I enabled gzip compression for the file type to get size on the wire down to about 120 bytes, so it's not a disaster if I don't fix this...

Depending on the number of icons (different sizes) you put in the file it can easily reach 15kB.

If you get me the original design (doesn't need to be .ico) and let me know what is 'crappy' about it, I'll see what I can do for you.

Easy and cheap way ..use GIMP

Then take a look at this search string

"Using GIMP to make favicon"

Gimp gives you the option to save as .ico

I can generate one no problem: I wondered if I was just being dense in ending up with one so huge (as well as looking bad) but from what J says, maybe not.

I'll have a go at one with some design in it next time and try not to worry about the file size so much!

OK, I've improved the look somewaht, and I'm letting gzip/deflate take care of the size.
